30 days of minimalism!

On this last day of the challenge, we’re going to take some time to reflect on our journey with minimalism thus far, and to create a minimalist mindset moving forward (so that we do our best not to fall back into our old ways).

For me, minimalism is more than just decluttering and getting rid of things. While freeing yourself from the things taking up space in your life is important, it’s equally important to free our minds. This shift in thinking happens gradually, and we need to train ourselves in order to truly embrace minimalism.

Creating a Minimalist Home: Day 29- Waste

One of my biggest personal goals for 2018 is to create less waste.

In 2015 my husband and I decided to become vegetarians to do our part to combat climate change, and to take a stand against animal cruelty. We stopped consuming meat and fish, and most animal by-products. I only use cruelty free products in my beauty routine, and ensure that anything I’m using in my home (such as cleaning products), aren’t going endanger this little blue speck we call home, or those living on it. Creating a Minimalist Home: Day 27- Spending

Have you ever used shopping to sooth a sad mood, waste some time with girlfriends, or reward yourself for achieving a goal?

Yeah, me too.

It lead to a lot of impulse purchases. Things I didn’t need, trendy items that would be out of style next season, or aspiration items.

It’s okay, you and I are not the only ones that do this! Our consumer habits are instilled on to us at an early age. Advertisers use many tactics to convince you that your life really will be better off if you buy their product. The Balance, talks about 13 ways advertisers persuade you to buy their products, and the ones that have worked on me are: scare tactics (the sales is only on for today!), endorsing people I like and follow, and attacking self-esteem through my social standing. Creating a Minimalist Home: Day 26- Storage Room

I’m going to be honest. I’ve been avoiding this one.

The storage room may be one of your biggest organizational sighs of relief once it’s completed however!

You may be thinking, “If you have a storage room doesn’t that mean you have too much stuff?”, or “you wouldn’t need a storage room if you were a true minimalist”.

Maybe, but I’d have to argue that living in a place with various climates and weather conditions means that I sometimes need to have different things for different seasons. For example, my summer capsule wardrobe would give me hypothermia in the winter, so it’s stored when not needed. Or camping gear isn’t needed when I’m not in the middle of the woods… Read more

One of my biggest challenges with my new position at work is that I’ve had to exercise my right to say “no”, which up until late 2017 wasn’t a word I used often. I was always focused on pleasing others, trying to constantly make a good impression, and honestly stressing out and getting sick by over-scheduling myself. Read more

The dining room was a simple one for us.

Is it for seeing the time, or are you looking at social media, taking selfies for your “snapchat streaks” (snapchat is honestly an app I can’t stand…mostly from a teacher standpoint but that’s for a totally different blog), or are you playing games trying to get the high score on candy crush?
